Opgetekend: Een simpele ster met veel betekenis

In ‘Opgetekend’ delen studenten en medewerkers het verhaal achter hun tatoeage(s). Dit keer vertelt David Putter (21), eerstejaars Communication Studies, over de ster op zijn elleboog. “Prima als mensen denken dat ik sterren mooi vind. Maar de tattoo staat voor véél meer dan dat.”

“Suriname is mijn thuisland, hoewel ik geboren ben in het Friese Heerenveen. Vanwege het werk van mijn vader zijn we er naartoe verhuisd. Ik was toen 5 jaar. Als gevolg heb ik alleen maar op internationale scholen gezeten en weet ik niet anders dan dat ik omringd ben door verschillende culturen. In Suriname was dat op de United World College en nu studeer ik hier op de HAN aan de International School of Business (ISB). Bovendien is het full circle dat ik weer terug ben op Nederlandse bodem, al weet ik niet of ik hier blijf na mijn studie. Ik denk van niet. Liever ga ik terug naar Suriname, waar mijn ouders en veel van mijn vrienden wonen, of vestig me ergens anders.”

Band of brothers
“Vanwege mijn liefde voor Suriname heb ik een ster laten tatoeëren rond mijn elleboog. Het staat voor de ster op de Surinaamse vlag. Veel mensen weten uiteraard niet dat ik het daarvan heb; ze zien gewoon een ster. En dat vind ik prima. Soms vertel ik wat het betekent als iemand er specifiek naar vraagt of me een compliment geeft. Andere keren zeg ik gewoon ‘ik vind sterren tof’, of ‘bedankt’. Een mooie bijkomstigheid aan de ster is dat de vijf punten voor mij symbool staan voor mijn vier broers en ik. Een soort band of brothers. Hoewel we niet bij elkaar in de buurt wonen, zijn we nog altijd hecht.”

Pijn en ongemak
“De stertatoeage heb ik laten zetten tijdens een reis met mijn vriendin naar de Verenigde Staten, afgelopen zomer. Het was nogal impulsief. In Detroit zit een hele gave tattoo artist. Het deed niet echt pijn, het was vooral vervelend omdat de naald steeds over dezelfde plek gaat. Dat gaat irriteren en geleidelijk aan steeds meer zeer doen. Ik was natuurlijk al wat pijn en ongemak gewend: ik heb al flink wat piercings.”

Van top tot teen
“Wat ik zo tof vind aan het design en de plek, is dat de ster simpel en strak is en de elleboog echt omsluit. Dat is ook mijn stijl: ik houd van symmetrie, geometrische vormen, eenvoud en zwart. Of ik het hierbij laat? Zeker niet! Ik wil op één arm een hele sleeve van tattoos, ook met rood erin. Sterker nog: ik wil een body suit. Dus mijn hele lijf, van top tot teen, gehuld in geometrische vormen in de kleuren zwart en rood. Dat zal wel even duren: zoiets kost tijd en geld. Maar dat maakt het ook mooi: een levenswerk.”

Kaasschaaf
“Eén arm wil ik gebruiken voor de meer luchtige en grappige tattoos. Zo wil ik een kleine kaasschaaf laten zetten. Mijn vader zei ooit, toen ik jong was: “Als je ooit een tatoeage neemt, schaaf ik ‘’m eraf met een kaasschaaf!” Dus ik zie er wel de humor van in als ik een schaaf laat tatoeëren, haha! Hij vast ook, al vindt hij het nog steeds niks, lichaamsversiering. Bovendien is de kaasschaaf een knipoog naar mijn Nederlandse roots: twee vliegen in één klap.”

ENGLISH VERSION

For ‘Body Art’ we interview students and staff of the HAN University about the meaning behind their tattoo(s). This time
David Putter (21), first year student Communication Studies, shares the story of the star tattoo on his elbow. “Some people might think: he must like stars a lot. Which is true. But it represents so much more than that.”

“Surinam is my home country, even though I was born in Heerenveen, a city in the north of The Netherlands. We emigrated because of my father’s work. I was five years old. As a result, I have been to international schools all my life and grew up around different cultures. In Surinam I went to the United World College and now I am studying at the International School of Business (ISB) at HAN University. So in a way, it’s full circle to be back on Dutch soil, though I am not sure whether I will stay after I graduate. I’d rather go back to Surinam, where my parents and most of my friends live, or settle somewhere else.”

Band of brothers
“Because of my love for Surinam, I got the star of the Surinam flag tattooed on my elbow. Not many people make that connection; they just see a star. That’s fine by me. If anyone asks what it stands for or gives me a compliment, I can choose between sharing a personal story or just say ‘yeah, I like stars’ or ’thanks’.  The five points of the star also happen to represent my four brothers and me. We are a band of brothers, close knit despite the distance.”

Discomfort
I got the tattoo done in Detroit, in the US. I was there with my girlfriend last summer. We hiked through Utah, but flew in and out the country through Detroit. There’s a real good tattoo artist there, named Alex, who did a great job. It was kind of impromptu: “I want it NOW, so let’s do it!” It didn’t hurt too much, it was more annoying if anything. The needle keeps piercing the same spot, so that starts to irritate after a while. Luckily I had some experience with discomfort and pain, because of the several piercings I’ve gotten before.”

Full body suit
“What I love about the design and placement of the tattoo, is that the star is simple, tight and bold. It encloses the elbow beautifully. It represents my style: I love symmetry, geometrical forms, simplicity and black. Do I want more tattoos? For sure! In fact, I’d like a full body suit. Black and red ink, geometrical shapes. It’s going to take a while to accumulate: it’s costly and takes time. But it will be a lifelong work of art.”

Kaasschaaf
“One arm, the one with the elbow tattoo, I’d like to reserve for small, fun markings. Like a Dutch ‘kaasschaaf’ (cheese slicer). When I was younger, my father used to say: “If you ever have a tattoo, I will slice it right off with a cheese slicer”. I think it would be quite funny to get an actual slicer tattooed on me, haha! I’m sure he sees the humour of it, though he still does not like body art in whatever shape or form. Plus, the ‘kaasschaaf’ would be a nice reference to my Dutch roots, so it’s a double win, right?”
